The ethics of face search — using it responsibly

A powerful tool comes with responsibility. Where face search helps, where it harms, and the line we draw.

Reverse face search can reunite people, verify identities, and expose impersonation. It can also be misused. We think it is worth being clear about both.

Where it helps

  • Confirming whether a profile photo is being used to catfish
  • Finding the original source and credit for an image
  • Verifying that someone is who they claim to be
  • Spotting impersonation accounts using your photos

Where we draw the line

Tools are neutral; intent is not. Stalking, harassment, and surveillance of private individuals are not acceptable uses, and we build guardrails — credit gating, abuse protection, and data deletion — to keep the tool on the right side of that line.

Build the tool you would be comfortable having used on you.
